A New Project for a New Year – Sweet Treats for Tet

January 12, 2010

Hi All – We have been quiet over the holidays, but we are still here!  We received a message today from Children of Vietnam about a program they have going called “Filling Hearts and Tummies with Chidlren’s Treats.”  it is a very cool program that provides families with not only treats for Tet, but also rice, fish, cooking oil and other items to battle malnourishment.

Here is the info we received today:

I am wondering if you might be willing to spread the word about another need?  We are making an appeal called – Filling Hearts and Tummies with Children’s Treats.  The official day of TET is February 14th, the same as our Valentine Day. Every year Children of Vietnam gives to poor children gifts during TET, Childrens Day, and Mid-Autumn Festival. This program falls under our Nutrition Program and we call it Childrens Treats. The treats are really gift bags or boxes of food for a family of four and small sweet treats for the children. We give these childrens treats to the families with whom we support. We also work with the local governments to identify the poorest of families in their districts.  The  cost of the gifts is between $15 and $25 dollars per family depending on the contents.  Last year, we distributed these nutritious gifts to 901 children!

[The ceremony is] usually held at a local government office meeting hall with a sign and speeches. The children wriggle in the parents arms or in seats next to them. Then they go on stage to receive their gifts. Most of the children get really serious and maybe even a little scared by being on stage but once off the stage they are happy to see what is in the bags!

Ms. Huong, just forwarded the cost of the food to be distributed for this years TET celebration. Add to the cost of the food, the cost of the bags, signs for the big ceremony, and for staff time all of which will make the actual total about $20 per bag of gifts for this TET. See below.

Would love to know what you think.  Happy New Year!

One gift will be including:
- Fragrant rice (10kgs, 22lbs): 150.000 VND $8.12
- Cooking oil (2 litres, 2.11quarts):  45.000 VND   $2.44
- Canned fish (5 canes): 32.000 VND  $1.73
- Cakes (1 boxes):          23.000 VND   $1.24
——————–
Total cost:            250.000 VND/gift  $13.53 (plus staffing & bags & ceremony materials) = $20.00

For a $20 gift you can provide a sweet gift to a family in need.  If you are willing, please proceed to Children of Vietnam’s donation page and find the box that says Nutrition Initiative Fund.  There is a drop box and you can select “Sweet Treats.”

Thank you for considering making a donation to what we feel is a very special cause.

Children of Vietnam- Mending Hearts & Parasite Reduction

September 29, 2009

Our second fundraising attempt is for a wonderful organization called Children of Vietnam. There are two initiatives we found to be particularly important: The Mending Hearts project & the Parasite Reduction project.

Please click here to read more about the Parasite Reduction Program & the Mending Hearts Program.

Children of Vietnam is staffed by 7 in-country employees (Vietnamese nationals) & a volunteer board of directors located in the United States.

Please click here to read more about how Children of Vietnam began.

Our dream goal is to raise enough funds to cover the cost of a life saving heart surgery- $1,500 usd & at least $500 usd for the parasite reduction program.

Additionally, an anonymous donor has agreed to match up to $500 usd! Please consider making a donation in lieu of holiday gifts or if you cannot contribute financially, please pass our link out to everyone you know.

For every donation of $30 usd or more, you will receive a small token of our appreciation: a box of super delicious chocolate straight from Holland :)

To make a donation, please click here & follow these instructions:

  • Go to Medical Initiative Fund
  • Choose Mending Hearts or Parasite Reduction

In the comment section, please let them know you found their organization via Mothers in Action for Vietnam.

If you make a contribution of $30 usd or more, be sure to send us an email with your name & address!

We did it!

August 4, 2009

We would like to announce that through your generous help, Mothers in Action for Vietnam has met both of our goals.  Project one was a complete success! A total of $670 was raised for the two corrective surgeries and $610 was raised for the mobile medical clinic.  We are so grateful for the generous donors who made this project a success.  Buu, Tuy and many others will now have access to the medical help they need, and it’s all because of the kind people who donated and those who helped us spread the word. Thank you!

We look forward to planning our next project and hope you will be a part of it as well.  We have some big ideas in mind, so stay tuned for ways you can help.

Love,

Lauren, Kelly and Kerry
